Benny is a good man, a hard worker who carries an easy smile with his quick, intentioned movements. He knows his practice, measuring carpets which he has been doing for over 40 years. When you speak to him you feel there is a heaviness, “I am tired. I have been doing the same thing for all these years and I am just tired of getting in and out of the car and being exhausted at the end of the day.” He goes on to tell me how he began as an installer, built his own business and lost momentum during COVID. Benny has two daughters at home and one in Brooklyn who are all trying to find their way. Behind the jokes and smiles is a caring, tender soul who has a deep commitment to his family and their future.

I am touched by Benny, his adoration for his girls, his kindness and his perseverance to keep going. We hug as we both become emotional; he touches his heart and says “I have always been a giver.”

A wonderful soul who has so much to give and carries so much burden.

As he left, I thanked him for being a teacher to me and providing me with this wonderful connection.

“I never expected this,” as he gives me another embrace and tells me to call him whenever.

I reciprocate saying my door is always open to talk or have a cup of tea.
