A boy about the age of ten hangs on the side of the cart as his mother puts groceries on the conveyor belt. He is eager to speak, especially after I offered him a sticker and asked him what makes him happy. He told me about trampoline jumping and doing a special front flip which he went on to show me the movements required. Then he talked about games on his computer. “I love playing because you can pause at any point, lift up your head and jump out of that world and come into this world.” His mother smiles but says nothing, the boy is in his moment truly enjoying being acknowledged.
Interesting, unlike most adults, the boy is aware of the identities one plays in different scenarios. Playing a game on his phone is no different than playing a game without the phone.
As adults want their kids off their phones and computers because they are not connecting or being "Present," how many adults are so caught up in the “things” in their own life that they forget to “lift up their head” and be Present in this moment.
